Ujima and Dr. King

"Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality."
— Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., from his speech "Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution," March 31, 1968.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. often reminded us of our interconnectedness. His words reflect Ujima, the third principle of Kwanzaa, which calls us to collective work and responsibility. In a profoundly connected society, ignoring one community's struggles is not just neglectful—it’s short-sighted.

As the saying goes, “When a major city sneezes, the surrounding suburbs catch a cold.” Problems like housing insecurity, inequality, or environmental harm may seem distant or unrelated but inevitably ripple outward. Ignoring them today will eventually impact everyone—very directly and most definitely inconveniently.

The Reality of Interconnectedness

We see this truth in:

  • Economic disparities: Poverty in one area can lead to higher crime rates, affecting nearby communities.
  • Environmental issues: Pollution doesn’t respect borders, impacting health and ecosystems across regions.
  • Social inequality: Injustice and unrest in one part of society disrupt the stability of the whole.

Dr. King’s message challenges us to acknowledge that we are all part of the same fabric. A tear in one section weakens the entire structure.

Practicing Ujima

Ujima calls us to action: to address issues as a community, not just as individuals. This might mean volunteering, advocating for policies that promote equity, or supporting organizations working for change. The stronger our collective effort, the healthier and more resilient our communities become.

Final Thoughts

Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community depends on recognizing and acting on our interrelatedness. Ignoring the struggles of others only delays the impact—and makes it harder to repair. Practicing Ujima ensures that we all rise together, stronger and more connected than before.

What step will you take today to strengthen the fabric of your community?
